On the occasion of Janmashtami, Mumbai Congress President and MLA Varsha Gaikwad, along with women party workers, participated in the breaking of a 'Dahi Handi' in a symbolic protest against the 'rising oppression', 'increased incidents of atrocities against women', 'casteism', and 'inflation' in the country.

In a statement from the party, it was highlighted that following Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's successful Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Mumbai Congress has adopted a more assertive stance. Varsha Gaikwad, the newly-appointed Mumbai Congress President, has infused a sense of awareness and enthusiasm among party workers by leading initiatives against the incumbent government.

Accompanied by women party workers, Varsha Gaikwad broke the 'Dahi Handi' and encouraged women party workers to take a firm stand against corruption within the government.

Congress MLA Varsha Gaikwad expressed her belief that in 2024, the sins of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government will be exposed and addressed just as the 'Dahi Handi' was broken. She stated, "Corruption has only worsened during the Modi regime, which assumed power promising to eradicate it. In addition, inflation has reached unprecedented levels, and the number of cases of atrocities against women across the country has also increased. The symbolic breaking of the Handi serves as a form of protest against the state of affairs in India."

Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, revered for his playfulness and innocence. Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, is believed to have been born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra according to the Hindu calendar, which usually falls in August or September as per the Western calendar.

The Janmashtami festival includes various customs such as offering prayers to Lord Krishna, decorating swings, performing dance and music, and organizing the 'Dahi-Handi' competition.
