Goregaon, Malad, Santacruz West to Bandra West, Borivali and Kurla have more potholes to be filled compared with the other 19 wards

With the monsoon lingering on, five of the city’s 24 wards are grappling with rising complaints about potholes. Civic officials said Goregaon, Malad, Santacruz West to Bandra West, Borivali and Kurla have more potholes to be filled compared with the other 19 wards. This was revealed during a meeting last week to review the progress of filling potholes on city roads.

Last month, potholes had suddenly turned into a huge talking point, with the chief minister, opposition and the mayor slamming the civic administration over the poor state of Mumbai’s roads. Early last week, the BMC chief had asked his staff to work on a war footing to make all roads pothole-free.
Following his diktat, R Talkar, chief engineer of Roads department, had reviewed complaints on various platforms, social media or BMC’s pothole tracking system. It was found that P South (Goregaon), P North (Malad), R Central (Borivli), H West (Santacruz West to Bandra West) and L (Kurla) wards were yet to complete the work on potholes, said sources.

As per the BMC’s pothole tracking system, the city has 1,160 potholes of which 680 have been filled. Officials said engineers are also trying to level potholes that are unreported, they are struggling with work as they are not getting a longer dry spell for the filling material to remain intact. Talkar, said, “I have reviewed the pothole situation and have instructed those five wards where the pendency was higher than the other 19 wards to speed up the work. I will again review the work.”
Mumbai at present has 147 km of project roads at various stages of work that must be pothole-free and should be attended by the central road agency of the BMC. Nearly 625 km of roads are in defect liability period which means the contractors of these roads are responsible for filling potholes on these thoroughfares and BMC engineers will have to get the work done by them. The wards have to maintain a road network of 1,087 km.
