Of the 93 women candidates who contested the polls in the state, 13 won and 11 of them are from AAP alone

To ensure party’s victory in the Punjab Assembly elections, the AAP fielded candidates from all walks of life and most of them are from non-political background. These included medical practitioners, and nine of them even won.

Like AAP, other parties, too, fielded candidates with medical backgrounds. It is for the first time in the history of Punjab that the Assembly would have 12 MBBS doctors, including nine from AAP, and one each from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Most of the winners will be first-time MLAs.

The AAP winners are Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal, who won from Tarn Taran, Dr Charanjit Singh from Chamkaur Sahib, Dr Inderbir Nijjer from Amritsar East, Dr Baljit Kaur from Malout, Dr Vijay Singla from Mansa, Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora from Moga, Dr Ravjot Singh from Sham Chaurasi, and Dr Balbir Singh from Patiala Rural. The other medical practitioners who won the state polls include Congress leader Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal who contested from Chabbewal constituency, BSP leader Dr Nachhatar Pal from Nawanshahr and SAD leader Dr Shukwinder Kumar Sukhi from Banga.
Apart from MBBS doctors, 93 women candidates contested the Punjab Assembly polls and 13 of them won, and 11 of them are from AAP. “We fielded commoners to contest the elections and it proved out to be fatal for our opponents. Many of the AAP candidates have won the Assembly election for the first time. We gave an opportunity to women as our party believes in women empowerment,” said a party worker in Chandigarh.
The 11 AAP winners are Jeevanjyot Kaur who defeated Navjot Singh Siddhu in Amritsar East, Narinder Kaur Bharaj from Sangrur, Sarabjeet Kaur Manuke from Jagraon, actor-singer Anmol Gagan Mann from Kharar, Rajinder Pal Kaur Sheena from Ludhiana, Dr Baljit Kaur from Malout, Inderjeet Kaur Mann From Nakodar, Neena Mittal from Rajpura, and Amandeep Kaur Arora who defeated Congress candidate Malvika Arora, the sister of actor Sonu Sood, in Moga.
