It was a rainy start to the weekend for Mumbaikars. And, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) says there will not be any respite for the next two days. The IMD has predicted 'heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places and extremely heavy rainfall in one or two places' in the next 48 hours.

The city has received 380 mm rainfall in the past week, which amounts to 15.4 per cent of the annual average of 24533 during the entire season. Friday alone saw 115 mm rainfall, the highest so far this month.

The downpour continued on Saturday and until 2 pm, the eastern suburbs had the highest average rainfall (32 mm), followed by the island city (29 mm) and western suburbs (18 mm). Parts of Thane, Charni Road, Borivli, Jogeshwari, Santacruz, Mulund and Vikhroli saw waterlogging.

Playing havoc
Traffic jams were reported on Western Express Highway, between Borivli and Malad, owing to ongoing repair work at the Thakur Complex flyover. A small portion of a protecting wall near Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari, collapsed around 1 PM on Saturday, leading to further traffic congestion on WEH.

Similarly, traffic dragged on LBS Marg, but there were no reports of major disruption. Train services were not seriously affected, but were running a few minutes behind schedule. A portion of a three-storeyed chawl's balcony in Khar Danda caved in, but no one was injured.
