The accused, Urmila Gupta, was arrested for stealing Rs 9,000 from a wad of notes, amounting to lakhs. Gupta told the police that she had only intended to steal her salary, and hence, did not disappear with the entire bundle.
According to the Charkop police, the arrest took place after Gupta's employer Suresh Behram Daruwala, 53, registered an FIR under Section 381 of the Indian Penal Code (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master). Daruwala, who runs a construction business, lives with his wife and two children at Shitij Apartments in Kandivli (west).
Gupta worked as a domestic help at Daruwala's residence between 9 am and 7 pm, every day. In his complaint, Daruwala said that on May 31, one of his business partners had visited his home and handed over Rs 2.5 lakh in cash. He asked his wife to keep the money in the safe, but since she was busy, she kept it under the pillow of her bed.
Later, the complainant's wife noticed that 18 notes were missing from a bundle of R500. Daruwala then filed a complaint with the police. "The Charkop police detained Gupta, and during questioning, she confessed to the crime," an officer said. The accused has been remanded in judicial custody.
