Unexpected showers in Mumbai throw BMC in a tizzy

Civic body's health department increases vigil outdoors to stop mosquitoes from breeding and prevent dengue

Unexpected showers in the city might have come as a respite to many but it has become a cause for concern for the public health department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Officials are worried that mosquitoes will now breed in the open, increasing the risk of dengue all the more.

According to an official from the weather department, who didn’t wished to be named, the easterly trough from Lakshadweep to South Gujarat coast at about 900 metres above sea level has caused untimely rains in Mumbai.

Thunderstorms are expected in Konkan, Goa and central Maharashtra too. The weather will continue to be cloudy for a few more days.

But with dengue cases increasing in the city, the BMC’s health department is taking no chances. Executive Health Officer of BMC, Padmaja Keskar, said, “Untimely showers and moisture would lead mosquitoes to breed outdoors.

We have increased vigil to ensure mosquitoes don’t breed in the open.” Director of Indian Meteorological Department VK Rajeev said, “Light showers are expected for a day or two.”
