It may seem easy to name something after a member of a political family, or in some cases, too many things, as actor Rishi Kapoor would agree. But it is not always so easy, as a letter sent to the Charity Commissioner shows that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has objected to the use of his mother Meenatai Thackeray’s name for a samiti.

A copy of the letter available with mid-day, shows that Thackeray has objected to the registration of a samiti named after his mother citing no permission from him, or any member of his family was sought before registration. The mandal is to be registered as Swargiya Maa Saheb Meenatai Thackeray Phul Bazaar Vyapari Anyay Nivaran Samiti (Dadar).

Sudarshan Mandlik, one of the office bearers of the samiti claims that in March they decided to form it, and applied to the Charity Commissioner on April 12. “We were asked to visit the Charity Commissioner’s office on May 23 for verification and there we were informed that Uddhav Thackeray has objected to the registration of the name of the samiti.”

According to Mandlik, Thackeray says in the letter that firstly no permission has been taken from the family for using the name, and secondly there exists a mandal with a similar name in the Dadar flower market.

“Let me clear that the name of Meenatai Thackeray has been given to the flower market. So if we are forming a trust or society that will benefit the members of the market, obviously it will have the name of the market in it. Hence, we are using this name,” said Mandlik.

What’s in a name?
Mandlik’s father Sadashiv, who also is in the samiti, claimed that going by this logic, if everyone who works in the market has to make a letter head and is using the name of the market, everyone will have to take permission from Thackeray. “The name of the mandal that exists in the flower market is different from what we have suggested. Also if people have problems like this, then they shouldn’t allow the names of their family members to be given to such public institutions,” he said.

Mandlik is from the Congress while his father supports NCP.

A senior Shiv Sena leader close to Uddhav Thackeray confirmed that the letter has been sent to the Charity Commissioner’s office raising the objections. He said, “There are few who weren’t happy with the selection of the president of the existing mandal, hence they started raising the objection, but everyone cannot be satisfied. The one who is now heading the market was elected unanimously and with the full support of all the committee members.”
