Two more senior citizens succumb to swine flu in Mumbai

The number of people being afflicted by swine flu in the city on a daily basis may have slowed down, but the fatalities are continuing to rise.

According to the BMC’s epidemic cell, two more people, both senior citizens, have died in Mumbai from the disease. 15 patients have tested positive for H1N1 virus and are being treated across city hospitals. The total number of swine fu patients being treated across the city has touched 1783 in the span of two and a half month.

Both the senior citizens succumbed to the virus in the last 72 hours.

A 65-year-old Mulund resident, who was admitted to Ashwini hospital on March 20 and moved to Fortis Hospital after seven days, died due to Cardiorespiratory arrest with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

The other fatality was a 64-year-old Andheri resident, who was being treated for over six days at BSES Hospital, who died on March 29. He succumbed to ARDS with septic shock (an infection caused by toxics which initiate a full-body inflammatory response).

Meanwhile, all swine flu patients admitted in city hospitals are said to be stable. The two recent deaths have taken the death toll across the city to 44, out of which 17 cases are from Mumbai and rest are patients who came to the city for treatment.
