Earlier in the day, the young brothers, who studied in Gyan Prakash School, had left home at 8.30 am to attend tuitions and later school. The police believe they must have entered the trench on their way to school from tuitions.
"We were alerted by residents of a nearby residential complex that two children removed their school uniforms and jumped into the water but failed to emerge," said Samadhan Dhanadhar, Senior Police Inspector, Saki Naka. "The children must not have realised that the trench is over six feet deep. As per procedure, we have sent the bodies for post mortem," he added.
According to Suresh Palande, a local resident, the disaster was waiting to happen. "The area is not illuminated at night. And had there been a single security personnel present on the spot, this tragedy could have been averted." The fire brigade, reportedly, took over an hour to retrieve the bodies because a substantial amount of water had to be pumped out.
According to Deputy Commissioner of police (DCP) Prakash Mutialt, the police will register a case of negligence against the contractors if required. "Though it appears to be a case of accidental death, we will proceed with our investigation. We are waiting for the parents to return." The parents are currently out of the city.
