The process to make the project into a reality has been started as MSRDC is appointing a consultant for preparing feasibility study and preparation of Detailed Project Report for six-laning cum elevated Road on Bhiwandi-Kalyan Shilphata road.
A senior MSRDC official said, “We want to improve the connectivity between Kalyan and Bhiwandi which, at present, is not that good because of the narrow and bad condition of roads at many places between the two important locations. So, we have come up with a plan of having an elevated road that would connect these two places and the commuting problem would be solved.”
Another senior MMRDA official, who did not wish to be named, added, “As per plans, we would be constructing a 20-25 km long elevated road along NH3 between Bhiwandi and Kalyan. This would take two to three years once the work order is given to the contractor. There would be entry and exit ramps in between along this elevated road and heavy and multi-axle vehicles that travel between Kalyan-Shilphata and Bhiwandi would benefit because of this.”
The project has been in pipeline from more than three years now but the final nod to the project was given in November last year by the Chief Minister-headed cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure.
MSRDC has invited tenders for the appointment of technical consultant for consultancy services for Feasibility Study and Preparation of Detailed Project Report for six-laning cum Elevated Road on Bhiwandi-Kalyan Shilphata road. MMRDA also has plans to set up growth centers in MMR, and Bhiwandi is going to be developed as a logistic hub.
“The planning authority has been implementing the Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project only to develop the metropolitan region and so it has also made adequate budgetary provision for development of growth centres in Bhiwandi and Kalyan last year. We would be more than happy if the road network connectivity is developed between Kalyan and Bhiwandi. We also have been doing work on improving the road network in MMR,” asserted MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kawatkar.
