Aug 15: The Prime Minister urges Anna Hazare to abstain from fasting in his Independence Day address.

Aug 16: Anna Hazare begins fast but is arrested. Released the same day, but refuses to leave Tihar Jail.

Aug 19: Shifted to Ramlila Grounds where he continues fast.

Aug 26:u00a0 Government calls a meeting at night to work on a plan to find a way to satisfy Hazare without undermining the Parliament and its right to legislate. Senior ministers consult Hazare's associates and Opposition leaders.

Aug 27: By 3 pm, the agreement reached on finding a common ground falls through. Hazare's associates, who arrived at Parliament while the Lokpal debate was underway, said they were told that instead of a resolution, the Parliament would issue a statement to convey "the sense of the House." Unless there is a vote in both Houses, the deal is off, they said, calling this a clear case of betrayal.

Pranab Mukherjee puts forward a resolution that incorporates the demands of Team Anna, which both house ratify not through a voice-vote, but by a thumping of tables. Speaker Meira Kumar said the 'thumping of tables was akin to a voice vote'.
