Students of St Mary's High School Kandivli visited Azad Maidan to show their support for Anna Hazare, instead of going on a school picnic. A 150 strong contingent comprising students, teachers and other staff headed to Azad Maidan, despite steady showers that marked Saturday.
The school House Captains asked each classroom of students if they'd rather visit Azad Maidan instead of going on a picnic. The decision was unanimous. School principal Padma Gudimella said, "When the secondary school students decided to cancel their picnic and go to Azad Maidan, the primary school children expressed an interest to go too.
I asked them what they knew about Hazare and some said he would reduce the price of vegetables, while others said he was going to improve our country. After seeking their parents' permission, we took them with us. We even cancelled a unit test of Class 9 and 10."
The Mumbai School Bus Owner's association arranged for two buses to ferry the students. Association Chairman Anil Garg said, "If students can cancel their picnic to support Anna, the least we could do was sponsor their bus ride."
"The whole country is supporting Anna Hazare, we shouldn't remain behind. So we requested our principal to take us to Azad Maidan instead," said school Head Boy Prasan Samal.
Head Girl Vishaka Sargade said, "Not only did the principal support us, even parents encouraged us to join the movement."
