Thane: Teen found dead near railway tracks, family claims murder

The body of an 18-year-old boy was found near the railway tracks at Kalyan railway station on Sunday, and the Kalyan Government Railway Police have registered an accidental death case. However the deceased’s parents and his brother-in-law who visited the spot, claim they found from locals that he had been assaulted by some youngsters who then killed him.

The family members approached the Mahatma Phule police as well as the Kalyan GRP, but claim that officials at both the police stations are yet to decide on the jurisdiction and are delaying registering a murder case. The deceased identified as Akram Shaikh, stayed at Kalyan west and worked as a salesman in a clothes shop in Kalyan.

He was found dead near the tracks around 300 metres from Waldhuni bridge between 12pm and 12:30pm on Sunday. “On Sunday after his dead body was found, the Mahatma Phule police and Kalyan GRP took almost four hours to decide the jurisdiction. After pressure from social workers, after four hours they registered an accidental death case,” said Sajid Shaikh, the brother-in-law of the deceased. Akram’s body was shifted to Rukmini Bai Hospital in Kalyan for a postmortem.

Locals claim attack
Shaikh, a resident of Thane said that half an hour before the incident he and his wife had met Akram. “We were heading back to Thane, when we met him near the station. We asked him to go home and he said that he was leaving,” said Shaikh.

Shaikh said the body was found near tracks leading to the yard. “Once in two hours or a day a train comes on the tracks. And if it comes, it is slow. Akram was very active and would have noticed the train. We don’t think it’s an accident,” added Shaikh who visited the spot on Monday morning. He claims on reaching the spot, he was shocked when he spoke to locals. “The locals told me that they had seen Akram being assaulted by a group of youngsters, who then threw him near the tracks,” added Shaikh.

On Monday from 11am the family of the deceased had been approaching the police to register a case. “Its almost more than 8 hours, yet the police are delaying the matter. The Mahatma Phule officers claim the spot where the body was found is in the jurisdiction if Railway police, and the GRP claims it is the jurisdiction of Mahatma Phule police station. Where should we go is now the question,” said Shaikh.

Police speak
When contacted, Anil Pawar, Senior Police Inspector, Mahatma Phule police station said, “The Kalyan GRP has registered an accidental death case, and they are further investigating it. It is not in our jurisdiction.”
