Thane: Quarrel over buying car leads woman to suicide

31-yr-old was having constant tiffs with husband because she wanted to buy a car, but it was getting delayed due to financial trouble; cops feel she may have taken extreme step in anger

Thane: Quarrel over buying car leads woman to suicide

A tiff over buying a car allegedly led to the suicide of a 31-year-old housewife from Kalyan on Saturday. In his statement to the Kolshewadi police, her husband stated they had an argument that day since she wanted to buy a car and he was delaying it due to financial problems. Irked at the delay, she took the extreme step.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Jayrani Nalkannu (31), a resident of Triveni apartment in Kolshewadi in Kalyan (east). Jayrani lived in the flat with her husband and a daughter. Both of them are marketing professionals and work in a Mumbai-based private firm.


The incident took place on Saturday between 10 am and 6 pm.

“The husband Nalkannu returned home at around 6 pm, and found his wife hanging in the kitchen. She hanged herself to a hook in the kitchen wall, with the help of a saree. Nalkannu informed the police and Jayrani was then shifted to Rukmani Bai hospital, where the doctors declared her dead,” said a police officer from Kolshewadi police station.

Upon being interrogated by the police, Nalkannu said they left for work together on Saturday, but he does not know when his wife returned home. Kalyanji Ghete, Senior Police Inspector, Kolshewadi police station said, “When we interrogated the husband of the deceased, he stated they had an argument as the deceased was asking him to buy a car from the past many days. But it was getting delayed due to financial problems.”

“The deceased got angry about the delay and might have taken the extreme step in anger. During the primary investigation, we found out about the car issue. We will further investigate to know the exact reason behind the suicide.”

Late night on Saturday, the Kolshewadi police registered an accidental death case in the matter. “We have handed over the deceased’s body to her parents, who reside in Mulund. They are undertaking the last rites. Once, they complete the rituals, we will further interrogate them to know the exact reason behind the suicide,” added another police officer. mid-day tried contacting Nalkannu for comment, but his phone was switched off.
