More trouble is brewing for Hiralal Jadhav, the suspended former superintendent of the Thane central jail. While the state prisons department has slapped a fresh FIR on him for taking Rs 9,700 in government funds through his drivers for his personal vehicle, an internal inquiry has revealed that Jadhav indulged in misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 9 lakh during his stint at Thane central jail, a top prison official told mid-day.

Jadhav's acts came to light a few months ago, when a team of the prison vigilance department in Pune visited the Thane jail. During their audit, it was found that Jadhav, through his drivers, had taken Rs 9,700 to fuel his private vehicle - a Maruti Dzire. He has also allegedly misused his transport allowance. The misappropriation of Rs 9 lakh was also revealed in the same inquiry, however, the current FIR is regarding the Rs 9,700 he took for his personal use.

Fudged records
"After these findings, legal opinion was sought from experts. An FIR against Jadhav was registered under section 409 (Criminal breach of trust by public servant) of the IPC on Wednesday at the Thane Nagar police station on the complaint of Thane jail office superintendent Jyotiram Pawar," a jail officer said.

In his complaint, Pawar has said that from April 5 to August 27, 2016, when Jadhav was the superintendent of Thane central jail, he used government funds to fuel his personal vehicles, through his four drivers. Pawar stated he had to make changes in the register favouring Jadhav, under pressure from him. MV Dharmadhikari, senior inspector, Thane Nagar police station said, "We have registered a case and are further investigating the matter."

Revenge?
The FIR is being seen as the department's revenge as it suspects that Jadhav circulated DIG (prisons) Swati Sathe's messages on a Whats-App group, seeking support for Byculla women's prison officials arrested for the alleged murder of inmate Manjula Shetye. mid-day reported about Jadhav's letter to the CM about the messages on July 7 in 'Probe chief sad for cops, rival alleges conflict.' Taking the allegation against Sathe forward, Jadhav filed an intervention application in a PIL against the prison department seeking action against her. Sathe had nailed Jadhav in a 2016 inquiry into corruption charges against him.
mid-day tried to reach Jadhav, but his phone was switched off.
