The 13-year-old allegedly committed suicide after his father screamed at him for flying kites; he used to regularly do so, much to the chagrin of the parent, who wanted him to concentrate on his academics
When Sunil Shinde, a Santacruz resident, chided his son for flying kites in the evening, he would’ve never imagined the extreme step the boy would take. His 13-year-old son Shitij proceeded to hang himself from a ceiling fan with the help of a dupatta.

Shitij Shinde’s father disliked his hobby and had scolded him several times in the past
The incident occurred on Monday evening when Shitij’s father noticed his son flying kites outside his house. Incensed, he shouted at Shitij and tore his kite. He even threw the spool on the ground and scolded him in front of all the neighbours. According to senior police inspector Vinayak Mulay of Vakola police station, Sunil Shinde didn’t like his son’s hobby.
He felt it wasn’t a sport befitting a 13-year-old and that his son was too old to fly kites. He wanted Shitij to focus on his studies instead. Residents say Sunil had taken his son to task for his activities often. Shitij has a younger brother, who is four years old, and has his vacations going on.
On Monday evening, when Shitij’s mother had gone to drop off his brother to tuition, the teen was flying kites. When his father saw him and screamed at him, he went inside the house. He took out his mother’s dupatta, tied it to a ceiling fan and hanged himself. Later in the evening, his mother found Shitij’s body.
With the help of neighbours, the boy was rushed to a local hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. Senior PI Mulay informed, “We have registered an accidental death report, and it is a clear case of suicide. After conducting a post-mortem, the body was handed over to family members.”
