Salary appraisal: Legislators give selves a 100% hike

The legislators on Friday — the last day of the Monsoon Session — snuck in a hearty treat for themselves. Both the houses approved a hefty salary hike (read 100 per cent) for themselves, jumping from Rs 75,000 per month to Rs 1.5 lakh per month.

The bill, in which the hike was approved, was not including in the day’s business but came up suddenly during a debate. There was no discussion held on the subject and the presiding officer asked the house to approve it.

When questioned why it was not made available to the media as is the norm, Vidhan Bhavan officials said that the bill had been sent for printing at the time.

A senior legislator, however, justified the hike and said that their salaries had not been revised since 2010.
