Renting a flat in Mumbai? Get police verification done via courier

In an attempt to prevent estate agents from fleecing tenants and their landlords, by charging exorbitant amounts under the pretext of securing police clearance, the city police seem to have devised a solution to keep greedy agents at bay.

It has been learnt that tenants and landlords seeking verification will no longer have to visit a police station. Instead, any of them can collect a form available at the nearest police station, fill in the required details and submit it personally or send it by speed post or courier.

However, the tenant or landlord will have to furnish the receipt for the mail he/she has sent whenever asked by the police.

A police officer said, “Estate agents tarnish our image by lying to their clients about the tedious verification process for which they’ll be required to visit the police station numerous times.”

Confirming the development, Joint CP (Law and Order) Deven Bharti said, “No NOC is required for leave and licence agreements, only police verification is enough.

Neither the landlord, nor the tenant is required to visit a police station personally. All they have to do is mention the information asked for in the form and courier it to the police station.”
