Ratan Tata: Not as big as your kitty, Mr Chief Minister

On Saturday, all roads led to BKC, and the traffic police had a hard day. But inside, Mumbai was revelling in music and commitment. The first Indian edition of Global Citizen saw politicians, stars and international bands pledge to work towards offering India gender equality, quality education, water, sanitation and hygiene.

The organisers announced that 25 commitments from policymakers will affect more than 50 crore people with an investment of Rs 22,940 crore. In the last two months, more than 5 lakh Indians took 20 lakh actions, prodding political and business leaders to be accountable in achieving the three goals.

While CM Devendra Fadnavis pledged Rs 500 crore towards the sustainable development goals, Ratan Tata, a bit hunched with age but oozing predictable panache pledged Rs 300 crore on behalf of his group, telling the CM his kitty was not as large as the leader's. Sachin Tendulkar joined them to say it's a match he doesn't want to lose. Milind Deora, Aditya Thackeray and Poonam Mahajan could've been a little less wired.

They mouthed rehearsed lines in dramatized style, drawing our attention to how they otherwise bicker, but are here today together on one stage. On Video conference, PM Modi shut up opposition that accused him of attending a concert when the country was battling a cash crunch. He didn't make it, and he did, telling a crowd of more than 80,000 that he knew he was standing between them and Coldplay.
