Ramabai verdict on May 5

A sessions court postponed the judgement in the Ramabai firing case on Monday. Ten people died and more than 25 were injured in the infamous incident.

The accused, State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) officer Manohar Kadam, who allegedly ordered firing on a Dalit mob, has been charged for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The judegment in the case was delayed for a month after the court clubbed two counter cases filed after the firing. The second case was filed against 11 people for rioting, assault and attempt to murder.

Additional sessions judge S Y Kulkarni, however, held that the verdict against Kadam should not be stayed as the trial is over. The trial against the 11 people is yet to begin.

The mob was protesting against the desecration of a statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar on July 11, 1997 after which the Maharashtra government had appointed a commission under Justice S D Gundewar to investigate the firing.

The report indicted Kadam for firing indiscriminately at the mob. Based on the report, the state sanctioned Kadam's prosecution in August 2001 and an FIR was lodged against him.
