In order to curb accidents due to people crossing tracks, railway authorities have recently identified 22 spots on the Central and Western lines where they plan to set up barriers to discourage them from trespassing between stations.

According to the officials, these are the spots where the frequency of trespassing is the highest. After several meetings and presentations, the planning authority, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), has zeroed in on these locations.

On Central Railway (CR) route, 12 trespassing areas have been identified at stations, especially near Thane, Kalwa, Mumbra and Kalyan, while on the Western Railway (WR) route, crossing of tracks is rampant between Mahim and Borivli.
An MRVC official said, “Most locations that have been identified are around slums, where irrespective of the situation, people end up crossing the tracks.”
Prevention at stations
mid-day had reported on April 26 how railway authorities plan to ramp up barriers at stations in order to discourage people from crossing tracks. The ‘trespassing project’ work has begun at Borivli and Kanjurmarg stations.
11 stations have been identified where barriers will be erected to discourage trespassing. Kurla, Kalyan, Vasai and Nalasopara will get FOBs, railings between tracks, green patches at the end of platforms, etc. in the first phase and Dadar, Kandivli, Bhayandar, Thane and Thakurli in the second phase.
