The CBI Magistrate Court yesterday allowed Peter Mukerjea’s application for home food at Arthur Road jail, where he is currently lodged. A variety of reasons were given in the application, which included Mukerjea’s health problems and his British nationality, because of which his body is used to a ‘different level of food quality’.

The application, filed by Mukerjea’s lawyer Kushal Mor, stated that Peter is 60 years old and suffers from various ailments, namely high cholesterol, high blood pressure and water retention. The application also said, “When he was in police custody, he was provided a proper diet by the CBI. However, the same is not possible in jail without order of the court. Moreover, he is a British national, and his body is used to a level of hygiene and food quality that is different from that prevailing in India and Indian prisons.”

Health reasons
The defence had also attached the pathology and microbiology reports from the Breach Candy Hospital Trust.

Dr Prakash Bajaj had issued the medical certificate. “Medical certificate shows that blood test of patient i.e. Peter revealed border-line hyperlipidemia and elevated sugar levels (after lunch). He is also on a cholesterol lowering medicine. He has Ischaemic Heart Disease. He is advised to maintain (his health) on home prepared food, using minimum oil and non-spicy items.”

Magistrate observes
The order passed by CBI Magistrate RV Adone reads, “Permission is granted to provide home food to accused Peter Mukerjea in jail by strictly following rules and provisions of Jail Manual under proper supervision of Jail Superintendent till further order.”

The magistrate observed in her orders, “Medical certificate of Dr Prakash Bajaj reveals that Peter has been under medical supervision for the last 25 years. Therefore, he is aware of Peter’s medical history. The certificate advised home food to Peter due to his ailments.

Considering his age, medical reports, health condition, and in order to avoid aggravation of ailments and deterioration of his health, it is proper to grant home food facility to Peter.”
