Sand mafia attacks revenue department team with stones during joint raid

A joint team visited Tembhikhedave sandbander in Palghar district to conduct a raid and seize illegal boats loaded with sand

During a joint raid by a team of officials of the Vasai and Palghar revenue departments against illegal sand mining at the Tembhikhedave sandbander in Palghar district on Tuesday, several members including the 'talathis' got badly injured when the sand mafias started pelting stones at them. According to police sources, the team had a total of 20 members, including two tehsildars, 10 department officials, local residents and cops. When the team was approaching the area in a boat, those sitting in the sand-filled ones parked near the creek suddenly started pelting stones at them.

More than five people were injured in the incident, which includes Hareshwar Mahatre, Kishor Patil, Vijay Patil and Nirvati Bangar (talathi of Vasai). The team visited the area to conduct a raid and seize the illegal boats loaded with sand.

Speaking to mid-day, Kiran Survase, Palghar tehsildar, said, "Around 4 pm on Tuesday when the team reached the area, they spotted several boats loaded with sand lined up near the creek. When the officials tried to tow one of the boats, those who were hiding inside started pelting stones. More than five people were injured in the process." Sources said that the injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. The cops who were a part of the team managed to catch hold of four accused, who were later handed over to the Kelva police.

An FIR has been registered against them and three pump machines and a boat have been seized from the spot. Confirming the development, Hemant Katkar, sub-inspector from Palghar district, said, "On the complaint of the injured officials the Kelwa police registered a case under sections 353, 332, 323 and 34 of IPC. Further investigation into the matter is on."
