A day after mid-day reported on the plight of a Nalasopara family in securing medical help for their 6-year-old who had been in an accident, the child has been granted admission at Sion hospital. According to doctors, Sajid Qureshi is en route to recovery.

On Sunday (January 14) evening, Sajid came under the wheels of neighbour Abdul Sheikh's bike while he was playing outside his home. But, it took the Qureshis over 7 hours to get their son admitted to a hospital, as most medical facilities, including JJ hospital, turned away the family citing lack of bed in their paediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Sajid had been undergoing treatment at Bhatia hospital, when the Sheikhs chanced upon a free PICU bed at Sion hospital. Abdul's brother, Ahmed, said, "Due to the financial crunch, we were looking for a government hospital. On Monday, we were told that a PICU bed had been vacated at Sion hospital, so we rushed to get Sajid admitted there."

Syed Qureshi, 43, said, "It was sheer luck that we found this bed at Sion hospital." A senior BMC health officer said, "Major city hospitals get patients from across the state. So, even if we increase the number of beds in the PICU segments, the demand continues to persist. We are helpless."
