Gym management say they shut Worli branch due to unsafe building, but landlords rubbish claim

The Worli branch located at Samandar Point was abruptly shut down on November 28, citing that the building was "unsafe" in a letter to shocked members.

Several gym members were livid, especially since the branch had accepted new members just two days before it shut.

But G Ramachandran, director, Gold's Gym, said, "We cared for the safety of our people and had to shut the gym.

Whatever we have done is legal." He backed his claim with a report by structural designer Parsram M Ramnani's office in Wadala.

Excerpts from the report, dated November 23 five days before the Worli branch downed its shutters cites a host of problems to the structure and ends with: "Even though repaired thoroughly, it may still not be stable to continue taking the load of heavy equipment of a gymnasium.

It would, therefore, be advisable if such use is discontinued with immediate effect." S H Pherwani, structural engineer, has signed the report.

But the landlords of the gym premises, Haroun and Anu Yusuf, cite a report dated December 7, from Mahimtura Consultants, a structural engineering firm, to rubbish claims made by Gold's Gym.

The report states, "The building requires only repairs in the form of plastering, waterproofing. The structure as a whole is in safe with few maintenance-related issues and will not cause any mishap in the near future."
