Now, Central Railway to demolish 146-yr-old Carnac Bunder Bridge

Days after the Central Railway (CR) demolished Mumbai's iconic Hancock Bridge, it is now known that they will soon begin the demolition in February of another heritage structure -- the 146-year-old Carnac Bridge. This is part of their overall plan to demolish four bridges and raise the height of two bridges.

The raised bridges will allow the trains to pass under them at a higher speed. “At first, the Carnac ROB will be taken apart by the end of February. After this we will demolish the Byculla’s Chammar ROB, Swadeshi Mill FOB at Kurla and Panth Nagar FOB at Ghatkopar,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.

The Currey Road and Tilak Bridge ROB will be the only ones whose height will be raised. Sources said that raising the bridge will improve punctuality since the trains have to maintain a speed restriction under them currently. Another advantage in raising them is that the drains that pass next to them will be widened, thus reducing the level of water that collects in these spots and stalls the trains during monsoon season.

The CR has been trying to complete all the bridge works on its line from the end of 2015.
