The school management had earlier planned to shift classes from the building to a new premises on safety grounds which some parents and political leaders opposed.
The issue also saw prolonged wrangling and court battles and a day-long 'Rasta Roko' agitation throwing traffic on Peddar Road in south Mumbai out of gear for the whole day on Tuesday. After hearing both the parents and management, over shifting of the students, state education director had ordered reopening of the classes at the old premises itself.
Aditya Birla Group, the school's management, made it clear that the building was declared unsafe by independent structural engineers and they will not be responsible for any untoward incident.
Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai-empanelled Mahimtura Consultant and Shashank Mehendale and Associates had even recommended demolition of the New Era School building after thoroughly examining the structure, the management said. The lives of people inside the building would be exposed to danger, Mahimtura said.
Ultrasonic velocity tests had shown that the quality of concrete is doubtful, said Shashank Mehendale and Associates. Now even some of the parents who claimed success about their agitation debated as to who will take the responsibility if something goes wrong.
