Less than a fortnight after the BMC announced plans to set up coin-operated toilet booths for women in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai has also set the wheels in motion for similar ‘e-toilets’ for motorists on the Thane-Belapur and Palm Beach roads. If all goes according to plan, the facilities could be available by June.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has floated tenders for the project, wherein it is planning to construct 14 e-toilets or bio-toilets at various points on the two major roads. The USP of these toilets are that they can be used upon inserting a coin, and will have an auto-flush feature, ensuring greater hygiene.

Officials said the system would automatically clean the toilets after they are used thrice. The civic body has estimated the project will cost around Rs 1.5 crore. Manoj Patil, executive engineer, sewage treatment and public toilet management, NMMC, said, “Out of the total 14 e-toilets, six will come up on Palm Beach Road, while four each will be built on the Digha-Mahape and Mahape-Turbhe stretches.

The existing toilet facilities on highways are least maintained, as a result of which people have no access to toilets while travelling on roads. These e-toilets will fulfil this basic need without harming the environment.”
