The Navi Mumbai Anti-Extortion cell arrested a 37-year-old divorcee, Pritam Ramesh Ranade, a resident of Taloja, who was trying to extort money from a 25-year-old woman's family with whom he was in a relationship with. Accused was also arrested for a short period of time for dowry harassment in 2015 before getting bailed. According to police sources, the victim found during this time that Ranade was married in 2006 and was father to three children.


According to a report in The Hindu, Ranade and the woman, who was staying in Navi Mumbai as a paying guest got acquainted through OLX over the possibility of letting her share a flat with his sister.


Introducing himself as Advait Pradhan and claiming he was a software troubleshooter, Ranade and the woman met for first time in 2014. They went on to become friends by chatting and exchanging frequent messages and soon initiated a love affair.

Ranade had already extorted Rs 1 lakh from the woman's family and was threatening them to cough up Rs 2 lakh more. He claimed if the money was not given to him he would upload inappropriate pictures of her online.
