Mumbai's builders urge state govt to take action

A year ago, when the BJP-led government came to power in the state, the real estate industry had sent out feelers that it was expecting a change in their fortunes too. Their hopes seem to have been dashed.

In October, Thane-based builder Suraj Parmar allegedly shot himself leaving behind a suicide note which alleged harassment by politicians and officials in Thane. Parmar had, reports say, also sought help from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in February, against those who were stalling his projects in the area.

The city’s builder community now claims that Parmar wasn’t alone in his struggles. The entire community has been looking for ease in doing business and Diwali hasn’t been a good festive season for them. They say that the government must make good its promises of making businesses smooth soon.

Arvind Goel, president of MCHI-CREDAI, Navi Mumbai, the apex real estate body, said, “There are certain projects which have been delayed for years. Much is expected from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the state government has to perform as well.”

Another builder claimed that, files clearance still take years and projects remain in the construction stage for that time. “We have to suffer the stigma that builders don’t deliver what they promise. The delay is because files do not get cleared.”

The mistrust has hit the markets as buyers don't want to invest in under-construction projects. Prakkash G Rohiira, of Karma Realtors, said, “Things will get better only if the government takes some steps towards making file clearances quicker.”
