Mumbai road rage: Army driver hurls abuses, threatens, slaps cops

A driver with the Indian Army and his cousin were arrested on Saturday night for misbehaving with cops -- abusing, threatening and even assaulting -- after they were caught for drink driving.

Virendra Dalvi, posted as a master driver in Ranchi, had come to the city for a holiday for 15 days. On Saturday, he along with his cousin Ravindra Dalvi and another friend set out for a party in Kandivli. After partying and drinking, the trio was returning home, on a bike, when the police on nakabandi duty at Raipada, Malad stopped them.

According to the authorities, around 1.30 am, Dalvi, his cousin and the other friend were riding a bike home, when the cops stopped them. When the cops began to question Dalvi, in his inebriated state, he told them he was not interested and that as aserviceman, they had no authority to touch them. Furthermore, when the cops asked Dalvi to come to the police station, he refused to sit in the police van, saying he would only ply in a military vehicle.

During the argument, the friend fled from the spot. As the situation got out of control, two police sub-inspectors and the assistant police inspector from Malad came to the spot and escorted them to the station. Things did not settle down, as Dalvi and his cousin continued to shout and abuse the authorities. They threatened the cops, saying that they had no authority. When the constables held Dalvi and tried to calm him down, he got angry and even slapped one of the constables.

API Sunil Shinde of Malad police station said, “We arrested Dalvi, who works for the army, and his brother under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 34 (common intention). They were produced in holiday court and remanded to custody. They were in an inebriated state.” Shinde added that they were searching for the friend who escaped. u00a0
