Think you can race to work because there's no cop watching? Think again. The traffic police are always watching, thanks to 40 speed detection cameras installed across the city. The cameras have been issuing e-challans to violators on a trial basis since December 30. If the initiative works, the department will instal more such cameras. The new cameras will not only detect vehicles over the speed limit, but will automatically generate e-challans for the violators as well.

Speaking to mid-day, Joint Commissioner (traffic) Amitesh Kumar said, "Installed cameras have been at work for the last six days, and we are monitoring their operation. The exact locations of these cameras will not be disclosed, but whoever crosses the speed limit will automatically receive a challan.

"We will gradually increase the number of cameras to cover more areas in the city in order to curb speeding." The speeding cameras had originally been introduced on a pilot basis on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. We got good results from the initiative; so, on an experimental basis, we're trying the same thing at 40 other spots in the city," said an officer from the traffic department."

The cameras will help cops to curb the speeding and racing menace in the city. This issue gets worse at night, and in some cases, speeding turns fatal," said an officer, adding, "Many times, these speedsters manage to escape the police net. Chasing after them can be can dangerous to our men, but these new cameras will catch them in the act."
