The Legal Metrology Organisation (LMO) has cracked the whip on establishments for printing more than one Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on products.
Nineteen of the city’s well known movie theatres and food joints have been booked for not following LMO’s guidelines.
The LMO had received complaints regarding establishments charging more money on food and beverages. LMO officials carried out a special drive across the state after this. Surprise checks were also carried out. The LMO checked 345 establishments in the state, and 134 of them were booked for various violations under section 18 (Declaration on pre-packaged commodities) of Legal Metrology Act. It was seen that the products carrying dual prices had 10 to 40 rupees more printed on them compared to the actual price. The drive established that companies were producing such labels to earn more profit and cheat consumers.
“It’s a malpractice which companies have indulged in. We found that products were carrying these dual MRPs right from the production house. We have written to the companies and asked them to comply with the law by desisting from such practices. They also have to pay the penalties,’ said Amitabh Gupta, LMO controller.
