A jewellery store staffer, who ran off with Rs 80 lakh belonging to his employer, was arrested by the Ghatkopar police last week. The police, however, have recovered only Rs 47 lakh from the man, who says he gave the rest of it to his father, who passed away this year. He doesn't know where his father has kept the cash.
On June 26, 2015, a Ghatkopar-based jeweller had given R80 lakh to his employee, Avinash Kulal (21), a resident of Mangalore, to give to the jeweller's brother in Mangalore. Kulal, however, fled with the money. The jeweller later lodged a complaint with the Ghatkopar police.
"We have been tracking the accused since June 2015, and finally got a tip-off that he would be coming to Mangalore. We nabbed him there," said senior inspector Venkat Patil of Ghatkopar police station.
"Kulal has been sent to judicial custody till November 21, and we are inquiring with all his relatives about the cash," said Bhimdev Rathod, assistant commissioner of police, Ghatkopar division.
