The Santacruz police has booked an assistant inspector posted with them, and his four associates for cheating a builder to the tune of Rs 3 crore, on the pretext of exchanging his demonetised notes. Police said that they have arrested three accused in the case and they are probing the role of their officer.
According to the police, one Raju Sawant, who previously worked as a Home Guard, had promised a Bandra-based builder, Sanjay Naik, that he would help him exchange Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Naik was worried about the currency and one of his contacts put him onto Sawant.
Pretext of exchanging notes
Naik left from Bandra on Wednesday with Sawant with the Rs 3 cr stashed in two bags, to exchange it at an ICICI branch in Santacruz. Near the bank, Sawant asked Naik to wait in the car, promising to return with the new currency in sometime.
“Sawant then took the bags from the builder, crossed the road, and got into another car waiting on the other side of the road. Naik saw Sawant getting into it and realised that he had been cheated. He tried to call Sawant and when the calls went unanswered, he went to the Santacruz police station and registered a complaint,” Mumbai police spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe said.
Allegation against API
Santacruz police has booked five people including Sanjay Mali, an Assistant Police Inspector from the same police station, under Sections 170 and 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of IPC.
Naik claimed that Mali was instrumental in helping Sawant in the crime. Following the investigations police arrested Raju Sawant, Maruti Gohil and Mahesh Shetty who were part of the group. The cash has not been recovered.
“We are investigating the role of the API and others whose names are mentioned in the FIR. If they are found guilty, we will take action against them as per the law,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti.
