A 22-year-old zari worker, Mohammad Sitare Sheikh, was arrested on Friday by the Dharavi Police Station on charges of raping his neighbour, a 14-year-old. The incident took place last Sunday at around 6 pm.

On August 10, the victim’s parents went to the market and the minor girl was sleeping alone at home. When her father returned home at around 6 pm, he saw Sitare in his house and his daughter informed him that he had raped her.

The brother of the accused, Dulare Haahi, promised that they will arrange a marriage between the two.

The girl’s father waited till August 15, but when no one showed up, he took his daughter to Sion Hospital.

Anil Gaikwad, investigation officer, said, “The police arrested the accused and he will remain in custody till August 20. The investigation is still going on.”
