Five years after a 19-year-old raped and murdered a nine-year-old in a chawl room in Nehru Nagar, Kurla, in 2010, the Mumbai Sessions court held Javed Sheikh, now 24, guilty. Special Public Prosecutor Pradip Gharat examined 36 witnesses including the girl’s parents and Shrikant Lade, assistant director, FSL.

“The case was based on circumstantial evidence and DNA reports,” said Gharat, who added that the quantum of sentence will be argued on Tuesday. “I will explain to the court why this is a rarest of rare case, thus asking for death penalty," he added. Special Women court judge Vrushali Joshi convicted Sheikh under all the IPC Sections including 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 376 (2) (F) (commits rape on a woman when she is under 12 years of age) and 302 (murder) of IPC.
On June 6, 2010, the girl went missing after she had stepped out to play. When she did not return, her mother filed a missing complaint at Nehru Nagar police station.
On the pretense of giving her a chocolate, Sheikh had taken the girl to Vatsalatai Nagar in a rickshaw, after which he took the victim into a chawl room, raped and murdered her. Sheikh fled the spot. On June 19, residents reported a foul smell emitting from the room and the police found the body. On July 1, Sheikh was arrested after the hair found in the nails of the girl's body matched Sheikh's DNA.
