The Worli police have arrested a 22-year-old driver in a rash driving case where two people lost their lives. The accused has been identified as Altaf Sheikh.

The car after the crash
Around 8.50 pm on Friday, Sheikh, who was driving a car bearing the number plate of MH-31-C- 9, lost control of the vehicle and hit two people on the footpath before ramming into a wall near Sukhda Apartment on Sir Pochkhanwala Road, Worli.
The driver, Altaf Sheikh, was taken into custody
One of the two victims was a sandwich shop owner and got hit while he was working at his stall, while the other was a woman who was eating sandwiches standing on the footpath. The impact was such that the front glass of the car was shattered, the bumper and the bonnet were damaged and the air bag of both the driver’s and the passenger’s side were inflated.
The sandwich seller, identified as Surendra Chauhan, 22, was rushed to the nearby Nair Hospital where he was declared dead. The woman was identified as Vrushali Tirmare, 26, originally from Amravati, who was was residing in Sion. She had gone to meet a friend in Worli. After she was hit by the car, local residents first took her to Poddar Hospital from where she was shifted to Hinduja Hospital. Finally, she succumbed to her injuries.
Senior officials from Worli police station said: “The case has been registered against Sheikh at Worli under sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (Causing death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code along with 184 of motor vehicle act. The car belongs to Ranjit Deshmukh, son of BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh. However, he was not in the car when the accident occurred.”
