Final year BCom student from Kalyan, Dravita Singh, was heading towards CSMT on Central Railway when tragedy struck and she lost a part of her right foot as well as a finger. According to police sources, Dravita, who works as part-time accountant at a South Mumbai firm, received a call on her mobile phone soon after the train crossed Sandhurst railway station. As she moved towards the compartment’s exit to get a clearer signal, a boy perched on an electric signal near Masjid station hit her forehead with bamboo stick, after which she lost her balance and fell off the train. While the minor managed to escape with her phone, a train coming from the opposite direction ran over Dravita’s hand, crushing her fingers.
The cops have arrested a 17-year-old 'fatka' gang member for the theft. Cops have also arrested Ruksar Barguya, 25, to whom the accused had sold the stolen phone.
Police sources said that the incident took place around 9.30 am on Wednesday morning, while Dravita was on her way to work. Speaking to mid-day, Samadhan Pawar, deputy commissioner of police, Central Railway GRP, said, "The accused intended to hit Dravita on the elbow, so that she dropped her phone. Unfortunately, she got hit on her forehead and lost her balance. Thereafter, the accused picked up her phone and ran away."
Hemant Singh, Dravita’s father, said, “After Dravita managed to get up and start walking, she spotted another train coming from the opposite direction. When she waved at the motorman, he immediately applied the brakes, but the distance was so less that she got run over. She has lost a finger and a part of right leg in the incident. Strict action should be taken against the accused and cops should ensure that such incidents don't happen in future.” Hemant informed that Dravita is in a stable condition.
Manhunt launched
Acting on a tip off, within 24 hours cops managed to arrest the minor accused from Sandhurst Road area. An officer said, “During initial interrogation, the accused revealed that he had sold the mobile phone to a Masjid-based homemaker. Within a few hours, we arrested Ruksar, too. We have formed police teams and launched a manhunt to nab other fatka gang members.”
