Hundreds of commuters gheraoed a constable at Mulund station on the eve of Independence Day, after the cop allegedly kicked flags being sold by a hawker. A mob of nearly 1,000 people had gathered at the station to demand the arrest of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) are investigating the matter. According to sources, a woman was hawking Indian flags and other items near the ticket window at the station. Around 8.30 pm, the RPF cop came by and asked the woman to leave. When she requested him for some time, he allegedly kicked the basket in which she had kept the flags.

Passers-by saw this and started questioning the constable, who told them that it was his duty to get rid of hawkers. This upset the commuters even more, and as a mob gathered there, they tried to manhandle the cop.

Both the GRP and the Mulund police arrived on the scene to pacify the mob, but people kept demanding the arrest of the RPF staffer. "We asked all passers-by to have patience. The personnel in question has said that he didn't kick the basket. We are investigating the matter and checking the CCTV footage," said DCP (Central) Samadhan Pawar.
