The bhoomipujan of the Dahisar-D N Nagar-Bandra Metro line (Metro II) was done on Sunday, and with it, BMC’s plans to build flyovers along New Link Road have been shelved. But the civic body may construct them across it.

The civic body was issued a letter by MMRDA to keep the project on hold while the alignment for Metro was being finalised. The MMRDA had asked BMC to build the bridges across the Link Road instead of alongside, considering the alignment.
With the Metro going ahead, the civic body may consider MMRDA’s suggestion. But since the traffic influx is only about 30 per cent that of the north-south side, the civic body is unsure if the project is viable.
The five flyovers were to be at the junctions of Link Road and MG Road, Don Bosco, Malad-Manori road and Mith chowky, at Chincholi bunder, and Bangur Nagar and Link Road, to ease heavy traffic in peak hours on the WEH.
“According to our previous survey, the traffic on the east-west corridor is only about 30 per cent that of the north-south side. We will now do a fresh survey and check how many people will actually benefit from the flyovers across. If the numbers are substantial compared to the cost, we may go ahead,” said S O Kori, chief engineer, Bridges department.
