After a resident of a housing society in Kurla West approached the V B Nagar police on Monday, complaining about a foul smell emanating from an apartment in the building, the cops found the decomposed body of a 65-year-old woman. Though the woman had died two days ago, her 47-year-old daughter did not inform anybody about it.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Sabir Subhan Sheikh. She and her daughter Mumtaj had met with an accident in 2006. The shock of the incident had made them mentally unstable. "Sabir's son Mushtaq lives in Dharavi along with his family. Earlier he used to visit his mother and sister regularly, but last year when the duo attacked him and his wife, they stopped going to the apartment," said an officer from V B Nagar police station.
Since then Sabir and Mumtaj almost locked themselves up in the flat. They hardly used to leave the place or interact with neighbours. Four days ago, some residents complained of a foul smell emanating from the flat. On checking, they found the duo alive, but the flat was extremely dirty.
On February 19, Asad Yusuf Khan, a resident, once again approached the cops and complained of the smell, which had again started coming from the apartment. However, when the cops visited the flat, Mumtaj refused to open the door. "She asked us to call her brother. When Mushtaq arrived, she opened the door, after which Sabir's body was found," said another cop. "We haven't found anything suspicious. It looks like a natural death. We have registered an accidental death report in the matter," the officer added.
