The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Sewri Creek is in danger
Rising insensitivity towards nature, as well as unsustainable developmental policies, have put 10 important bird areas (IBAs) of the country in danger. And the city’s Sewri Mahul Creek is one of them.

BNHS, working with the UK-based BirdLife International a global conservation organisation as its India partner, has been providing data on IBAs from India and partnering in research and conservation projects.

The new report on birds and biodiversity areas has been launched by BirdLife International at the ongoing World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia. Dr Raju Kasambe, the BNHS’ IBA project manager, said, “Unfortunately in India, nearly 50 per cent of the IBAs are not getting any sort official recognition from the government agencies.

These are the areas which need utmost and urgent protection, if we are really serious about saving the threatened species of birds in India. Our future generations will never pardon us for destroying the important habitats of birds in such a callous manner.”

Branching out
We are used to seeing posters on walls, advertising everything from hair oil to snake oil (yes, it’s sold on Colaba Causeway if you really wanted to know).

But why go as far as a wall, when a convenient tree is available? Outside Rabale station on the Thane-Vashi-Panvel route, a lodge owner has chosen a lone tree, nearly bare but sprouting enough leaves to declare its existence. And this standard-bearer of nature also bears a sign advertising the lodge. Complete with arrow pointing the way.

‘Park’ing space for a name
Shiv Sainiks rarely miss a chance to “name” Shivaji Park as Shivteerth, and Bal Thackeray’s death anniversary was another ideal opportunity.

Some posters outside Sena Bhavan had ‘Chala Shivteerth’ written on them, while a food counter outside the park also mentioned Shivteerth as if it was the address. A notice of motion (proposal put up by a corporator) has been pending for over two years, to rename Shivaji Park to Shivteerth.

But now with ties weakening between the Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the civic body, the proposal is less likely to be cleared, as the Congress and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena have already said “nay” to it.
