Wilson Jones

Wilson Jones memories
THE late billiards great Wilson Jones, we hear from a young player, was quite the foodie. The silver-haired Mumbai-based Jones, a cueing gentleman to the core, knew nooks and corners in the city where you would get some trademark foods from samosas to sandwiches and milkshakes.

Jones had a formidable knowledge of food, which he would not mind passing on to younger players, along with some cueing tips of course. He was also credited with a great sense of humour. Food facts and funny bones — we like that combo. Meanwhile, one is sure that Wilson Jones, who used to live in the city’s Sportsfield building on Worli Seaface, must be smiling from above, delighted with India’s win in the World Team Billiards Championships in Glasgow. One hopes he is having a little something (even a milkshake) at some favourite foodie haunt in heaven.

Cleaning up school sports!
AN NGO working in the field of betterment of sports and education has helped in the beautification of a part of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) premises. Till last year, the 121-year-old school body, which sees hundreds of school participating in its annual football tournaments, didn’t even have proper taps where the kids could have a wash.

But with the NGO coming to their rescue, three basic things have been put into place — taps for drinking water, renovated toilets and new showers. Also, new tiles have been installed, making the entrance to the ground more spacious.

Talking about the development, MSSA general secretary Sebastian Fernandes said, “Last year, the children had to go home wearing dirty clothes. Also, the toilet area was not clean. We were having a lot of issues with the toilet. I am happy that with this initiative, now the children can take a bath and drink clean water.”

You Just Need One
A POPULAR fast-food chain has the words “Fun, Friends, Food” put up on the exterior of its restaurants. At one outlet in the city, we spotted “Fun, Friend, Food” as the letter S has fallen off. Maybe the message is, one good friend is all you need! (And imagine the fun if the N also falls off from “Friend”...)

Rain pain
WHERE has the monsoon gone? In the middle of August, the weather feels like September in other years, with one day of showers and two of sunshine. People who planned weekend getaways were enjoying the absence of downpours, especially when driving on the highways. Those renovating their homes are getting plastering and painting done. Some are spring-cleaning early, spreading mattresses and quilts out in the sunshine. But it just feels wrong.

For those doubting climate change, it is right here in front of us. Ask the farmers and they are wringing their hands. Ask the lifeguards at Juhu beach (who are adept at predicting the weather going by the behaviour of the sea), and they may not be wringing their hands but they’ve thrown them up in despair. “Sab palti hai,” one of them told this diarist (It’s all topsy-turvy). “We don’t know what will happen.”

That seems to sum up the state of the planet.
