Mumbai - sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Run, eat, run in Singapore
Recently, when chef Saransh Goila was in Singapore on a five-day trip, he ended up sampling everything from Malay to Indian, Japanese, regional Chinese cuisines and even burgers. He has now curated his top five eateries in the Lion City - street food, fine-dine restaurants, dessert parlours and nightlife - that will feature in the first edition of his new online food and travel show, Run To Eat, which launches on his Facebook fan page on Friday night. The five-episode weekly series is called such because it also features Goila running through the city, practising his marathon routines. He will share more about the most adventurous running exploits, and landscapes in Singapore too. Next on his radar are the UK, Abu Dhabi and Australia. Go Goila!

Live 12 months of love
"...After she made him her world, and dreamt his dreams wide eyed, when it came down to it, he chose the world, and left her outside" go the lines beneath a picture depicting heartbreak. It appeared next to the month of September when this diarist received the calendar, but it gave us the option of setting another picture against the month, based on the stage of love we were at.
Aptly called #ayearoflove, the innovative calendar goes up to December 2018, and is the brainchild of mid-day journalist Aastha Atray Banan. She also writes poetry and micro-fiction on Instagram. "The calendar starts with prose that deals with falling in love, falling out of it, to healing and being ready for love again," she says. The pictures are by designer Shawn D'souza. Reaching the fifth milestone
Milestones were once a common sight across the city to indicate distances. With the passage of time and the vagaries of commercialisation and lack of foresight to protect our heritage, these stone icons are disappearing from our urban landscape.
Earlier this year, conservation architect Tapan Mittal of trail operators, Khaki Tours, discovered a marker in Parel and restored it, with support from Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Vishwas More. Today, Ramnath Jha, head of the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee, will inaugurate this restored milestone. Here's to more such milestones.
Bring back the Sultanganj Buddha
Be it conveying India's diplomatic viewpoints to mandarins across the world's power corridors when she was in service, or being a true cultural ambassador for the nation, former bureaucrat Nirupama Menon Rao wins this diarist's vote for favourite Indian ambassador, past and present.

Recently, while on a visit to Birmingham, she spotted a 2.3 metre-high eighth century bronze statue of the Buddha belonging to the Gupta period. Called the Sultanganj Buddha, it was excavated in the 1860s on a railway construction site and transported all the way to the UK in 1864.
The former diplomat suggested in her post on social media that if there is one antiquity - even more precious than the Kohinoor - that we should campaign to bring back to India, it should be this statue. The artefact is currently housed in the Birmingham Art Museum, which the Rao had visited a few days back.
Jam in Bandra
Having an outpost in Bandra or Kamala Mills compound is almost like a rite of passage for a city restaurant to announce its arrival. The quaint all-day bistro Jamjar Diner, which opened in Versova five years ago, is the latest entrant to the buzzing food scene on Bandra's Hill Road.
With old-school walls, stained glass windows, elements of art deco and a vintage jukebox, the restaurant's interiors have been designed in sync with what seems to be the latest trend among Mumbai's hip eating haunts - celebrating the neighbourhood, where they set up shop. The menu has been upgraded too, with new dishes including Grilled Cheese Steak Burger and Raw Power Salad, and cocktails such as the Pear Hug and Watermelon Bloody Mary.
