Let's seal the deal
Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain and British jazz guitarist-composer John McLaughlin seem to have firmed up on a new collaboration, we think. The four behind The Quarter - Ranjit Barot, Ashu Phatak, Nico Goghavala and Nakul Toshniwal, hosted a dinner for the Grammy Award-winning legend who was in town. Plus, there was a reason to celebrate since it was Cameroonian bassist Etienne MBappe's birthday. McLaughlin will perform at the same venue this week with Barot, MBappe and British pianist and drummer Gary Husband. This dinner was also attended by MBappe and Husband, as well as Rakesh Chaurasia, and Louis and Gino Banks.
Sport is a great healer
Last week, we had announced the uniqueness of a run combined with a trippy dance routine in these pages through the Goregaon Sports Club-organised GSC SOS 10.0 timed run. The vibrant event saw over 2,200 participants in action last Sunday, running and doing the complimentary Zumba (an aerobic fitness programme based on movements inspired by Latin American dance music) session simultaneously.

But more importantly, the organisers contributed to a special cause on the day, which happened to be World Cancer Day. GSC felicitated 25 young cancer survivors from the Tata Memorial Hospital and handed out a cheque of '1 lakh through Dr Suraj Suchak (oncologist, representing the Malad Medical Association) to Syed Jafri, senior public relations officer, Tata Memorial Hospital, to assist the hospital's cancer prevention activities. It's said that sport is a great healer. The GSC guys proved it!
Asymmetry can be fun
Art can play a role in capturing the imagination of kids. And museums are ideal spaces to nurture this. Little wonder then, that Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum saw a packed house of school-going kids recently who had a fun morning workshop inspired by the ongoing Asymmetrical Objects exhibition that is showcasing works by some of the country's finest artists. Shapes, sizes and colours wowed these little minds as they gazed at the displays by these 10 artists.
Tunes from Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv might not feature on the top of the list of countries with thumping dance music, but that should take nothing away from Red Axes, a duo from the Israeli city known for their post-funk beats. And we hear that they are now going to be touring India, even spending time learning the tabla, sitar and bansuri. Can we, then, expect some dance-floor bangers with Indian flavour?
Power to the crowd
City-based filmmaker Kumar Ritu Raj has been a part of the film industry for five years. And like others in the field, there was a time when he felt depressed and stuck in an endless rut. After reading about time theory and engaging in some self-introspection, he decided to take his story to the junta and help other hapless souls stuck in self-created illusions, or bhram. This also happens to be the title of his film, starring actor Heeba Shah.
In this full-length feature, Heeba plays Manorama, who deals with depression after losing her family in a car accident. She is sucked into a time loop of depression, anxiety and darkness. The filmmaker is now running a crowdfunding campaign on a popular host website to raise '12 lakh to complete the post-production and send it to festivals. If you can connect with the theme, go ahead and be part of the film.
Nostalgia on track
This year's railway budget allocation documents presented in the Parliament last week had a touch of nostalgia. The cover pages of every zonal railway document highlighted majestic British-era logos of the original railway companies, like the Great Indian Peninsula Railway Company's monogram stating Arte Non Ense (meaning by art [skill], not by sword) on the Central Railway document; the old Bombay, Baroda & Central India logo with coconut trees, and even a palkhi trail for the Western Railway. There's the East Indian Railway Company's signage of the elephant and the cross on the Eastern Railway document, while Eastern Punjab Railway's sunrise and steam loco logo can be spotted for the Northern Railway.
