The city - sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce
Of Maa and Mamata
A few days back, we stumbled upon a piece of news that went viral, claiming that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be “worshipped” by one group of supporters alongside goddess Durga.

This was at Prantik, a club in Nadia district in south Bengal that placed a life-size replica of the Chief Minister inside the main pandal behind the goddess. Amusing, we thought, though it didn’t come as too much of a shock.
When this diarist visited Kolkata a few days before the Durga puja madness hit the city, she was overwhelmed by the life-size cut outs and posters that lined the streets, particularly near the airport.
In a trend that bears resemblance to Amma’s presence across Tamil Nadu, the one in Kolkata also had Didi belting out traditonal shlokas like, Ya devi sarva bhuteshu shakti rupena sangsthitha (a Sanskrit shloka dedicated to Goddess Durga) on loudspeakers. While the pujas have come to an end, we suspect the megalomania is far from over.

The Showstopper Dress
Jacqueline Fernandez was in a fix during the shoot of a reality television show, also attended by Karan Johar and Dwayne Bravo, yesterday as her lace dress was caught in the judge’s chair.
Once relieved from the tangle, a production assistant followed her everywhere carrying the trail.
A new Star
Chef Anees Khan’s Bandra outlet is known for serving innovative Indian sweets. This Saturday, that emperor will don new clothes and re-brand itself as Star Anise Cafe. The new space will serve savories, desserts, and drinks – sandwiches, paninis, calzones, wraps, breads, cookies, waffles, energy bars, tea and coffee.

Earlier, there were a few savoury options and lots of desserts. Last month, another popular dessert place The Boston Cupcakery, launched in Bandra and started offering savouries with their sweet treats. Clearly, to work in Bandra, you have to offer everything, not just pastries.
The Big baritone in animation
Amitabh Bachchan keeps pushing the boundaries. Be it movies, shows, social campaigns; he keeps trying something new and often owning the medium with his baritone and charm.

Now, the baritone will enter the world of animation, as Big B will be seen as the mythical hero in the upcoming superhero series – Astra Force. The story of Astra is about two eight-year-old twins, Neal and Tara, who combined forces to save the universe from a new wave of giant monsters and super villains determined to rule the galaxy. May the force be with Big B.
Baba raps for Mr Bachchan
We just said, “rap”, so how can Baba Sehgal not be mentioned? On Amitabh Bachchan’s 74th birthday, the #RapForAB hashtag found its way to many tweets, but it got the oomph it needed from the pop star-turned-rapper’s wacky touch.
Baba Sehgal
From the rashtrapati-nashpati rhyme of his last sensation, Trump Mania, Baba now recommended that Senior Bachchan celebrate his birthday in a dhaba (pray, why?). That this campaign was a spin-off from a recent advertisement, where Big B did his own Yo Se Yo Se rap, must have made Baba feel in good company.
10 seconds did it for Sakshi
A while back, we told you how Olympic bronze medal winner, Sakshi Malik had taken baby steps into social media. Now, she seems to be truly on firm ground. Recently, the champion became the face of an international sportswear brand.
The video narrates her gutsy struggle on and off the wrestling mat, and tugs at the heartstrings for all the right reasons. Magar maine 10 second mein, namumkin ko mumkin kar dikhaya.’ Well said, Sakshi.
