The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Wednesday Dossier

Mumbai’s favourites
The hyper-local delivery app Scootsy completed a year this August. To do something fun, they decided to look into their records and curate the top 10 favourite picks by customers. A look at the list reveals that Mumbai loves its butter chicken, is gaga over Nutella and thinks shot glasses make the best gifts.

In food, Copper Chimney’s Butter Chicken, Royal China’s Prawn & Chive Dumpling and Indigo Deli’s Ham and Swiss Cheese Sandwich were the favoured eats. Nutella featured in two of the three in-demand desserts — the decadent Nutella with Sea Salt Cookie from Sweetish House Mafia and the Nutella cupcake from Ellipsis Bakery; the other was the Dark chocolate macaron from Le15 Patisserie.

Party Hunterz’ Shot glasses, Hamley’s Star Wars Darth Vader game and Kodai Dairy Farm Parmesan Cheese were other preferred categories. Our favourite, Mrs Funnybones by Twinkle Khanna was the preferred book (move over, Chetan Bhagat).

Mumbai’s very own stamp of Liberty
It’s one of Mumbai’s finest examples of Art Deco, and in the week of India’s 70th year of Independence, few might be aware that Liberty got its name because construction for it began in 1947 — the year of India’s Independence.

This cinema opened with Andaz that ran for two years! Later, in the 1990s, Rajshri Productions’ blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun did 2,341 shows in 847 days of its run at this cinema. It ran for 105 weeks in regular shows and 16 weeks in noon shows. So popular were the outfits of Hum Apke Hain Kaun that they were showcased in Mumbai’s Liberty theatre, a few weeks after the film’s release.

Back to college

Volunteers watch over a sporting event in progress on the third day of the inter collegiate festival, Malhar 2016. The three-day festival, organised by the students of St Xavier’s College concluded yesterday.

Whose birthday is it today?
Guess whose birthday is it today? Not sure? We will give you a few hints: she made her first appearance in the Action Comics #1, in June 1938 along with Superman, is the love interest of the Man of Steel and a tough-as-nails reporter of the Metropolis newspaper, The Daily Planet.

And now that Superman is dead, she is taking forward the legacy of the Man of Steel as Superwoman (according to the latest issue of Superwoman #1). Besides, no character from Superman has as much charisma, strength and determination as her.

So much so that DC Comics gave her, her own comic series, Superman’s Girlfriend and Lois Lane in 1958. There you have it. According to 1976 Super DC Calendar, Lois Lane was born on August 17. Happy Birthday Lois! Stay super.
