For a greater cause
It may be the month of May and summer vacation time for college and school students. But while many of the youngsters we know may be off on holidays to destinations in and outside the country, the 30-odd students of KC College’s Rotaract Club are working hard through the holidays. These are Junior college as well as Senior college students who are conduction various programmes for Cancer awareness in Mumbai.

HOLIDAY HOPE: The Rotaract Club members of KC College at Gateway of India with their message of cancer awareness
All these initiatives are part of Cancer Month observance by the group. The month of May which is Cancer Month was kicked off by a flash mob near the Gateway of India on May 3, which was followed by a marathon in Bandra on Sunday. Yesterday the Rotaractors had another flash mob at CST station to create cancer awareness.
The group has been working non-stop for the past three weeks since their exams got over. They visit Tata Memorial Hospital often to interact with the doctors as well as the cancer patients, in addition to organising for awareness. A Gujarati play on cancer will be staged at Birla Auditorium at Marine Lines on Sunday, May 17 at 5.30 pm. The group will also have a donation; the proceeds will be given to Tata Memorial hospital. All the information of upcoming events is being posted on their Facebook page named Cancer Month.
They say all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy. But these students seem to be leading the way of a trend for work for a cause. Work and play are mixing for social good. Kudos to that, we say.
Rajdeep all set for half-century
Journalist and celebrated TV news anchor Rajdeep Sardesai is shortly going to score a half-century. Not on the pitch which he used to grace in competitive cricket well before taking up journalism, but on the field of life. Sardesai turns 50 on May 24, and we think a bash is well in order; well-deserved too.
LOOKING FORWARD: Soon-to-be-birthday boy Rajdeep Sardesai
A little bird tells us that in fact, a party has been planned, not on the day itself but the day before — May 23, which is a Saturday. The celebrations will apparently begin with a 10-overs cricket match at a well-known venue in the city, which will be followed by the appropriate revelry. We can only surmise that the hi-jinks will go on till midnight rings in the official B-day. Allow us to wish Rajdeep a very happy birthday in advance.
Kapoor capers
You may have seen the one-of-a-kind photograph of cinema veteran Shashi Kapoor with eight of his former women co-stars in yesterday’s mid-day. Nephew Rishi Kapoor posted it on Twitter as well, with the comment “Wow”. We have to agree, it was an eye-catching, not to mention memorable, shot, at Sunday’s ceremony to give the older Kapoor the long-deserved Dadasaheb Phalke award.
WHO’S THAT GUY: Kunal Kapoor, Ritu Nanda, Krishna Raj Kapoor and Asha Bhosle. Pic/PTI
And then there was Shashi’s son Kunal Kapoor, looking oh so different from the chocolate-box hero image that we of a certain vintage remember. Circa the 1980s, Kunal starred in films that did well at the box-office as well as in the critics’ books, such as Ahista Ahista and Vijeta.
We came across this photograph that for a moment made us look twice and wonder whether it was indeed the younger Kapoor son, as he now sports a luxuriant salt-and-pepper beard in addition to the quirky moustache we have been used to. Accompanying him in the shot are cousin Ritu Nanda, aunt Krishna Raj Kapoor and singer Asha Bhosle, whose memorable ghazal Kabhi kisiko muqammal jahaan nahin milta was among the songs of Ahista Ahista.
The award function at Prithvi Theatre was definitely a trip down memory lane — at least for us viewers if not for the glitterati themselves.
