The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Thursday Theme

On our mind...
One does not always need grandiose statements and incisive reports to gauge the public reaction, such as to the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow at Wankhede where Devendra Fadnavis will be declared State CM.

A reader of this newspaper called yesterday afternoon, rather worried about the mega event that the city is set to witness. “What time do you think it would be safe to leave work, during the swearing in ceremony? I work at Marine Lines and I do not want to be stuck during rush hour.”

After being told the approximate time of the swearing in, the worried gent continued, “I think I will leave by 5pm, as there will be less traffic, the cars will be parked and people will be inside for the swearing-in ceremony.

Otherwise, outside it will be disaster!” he signed off in alarm. Maybe so many other Mumbaikars are thinking the same… and for sure, this time we do not hear Mumbai saying: TGIF Thank God it’s Friday.

Is the bond coming Unstuck?
We are a little startled to hear that Ogilvy and Mather’s creative powerhouse, Abhijit Avasthi, is quitting as National Creative Director after 15 years with the agency.

Not because of any fallout, but because he’s starting his own agency, says media-watching site mxmindia.com.

Avasthi is the brain behind memorable ads such as Fevicol, and while his own agency is sure to produce great work, we wonder how his departure will affect Ogilvy.

Leading the weigh
If you have a problem as a consumer, you need not go running around in circles to get redressal. Whether it is a faulty gas cylinder or being shortchanged by your builder, you can go to the Consumer Guidance Society of India’s legal aid session in the city, and state your cases.

The session is held on either Wednesday or Friday every week, in the afternoon. It is open to the public, and you can register by calling the toll-free number, 1800-222262, or sending an e-mail to mah.helpline@gmail.com. The sessions are held at the CGSI office in Block ‘J’ at Azad Maidan, Mahapalika Marg, Opposite Cama Hospital.

In the latest session the consumer body settled four cases satisfactorily that of a cooking range hood’s missing warranty, an investment scheme, a housing society’s refund, and recovery of dues from a cooperative credit society. It’s truly a forum for the common man.

Roaring development for animals
What with all this talk of lions and tigers, euphemisms for similar roaring qualities in humans (or so we assume), it is welcome news that the African lion has been included in the list of endangered species — the last big cat to make the list, and not a day too soon.

The proposal by the US Fish and Wildlife Service would make the African lion the last big cat to receive federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. In the last two decades, lion numbers have fallen by 30 per cent, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Several groups, including the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Humane Society of the United States and Defenders of Wildlife, petitioned the government in 2012 to list the African lion as endangered, a category that offers more protection than the “threatened” designation which the lions have been given.

Tigers, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars and pumas are all listed as endangered. We hope this takes us closer to a tougher global crackdown on hunting and poaching, so we can treasure what is left of our wild, wonderful world.
